Chapter 1 ~ The Fire That Took Everything
The air was thick with smoke, its acrid scent stinging Gloria's throat as she rushed through their townhouse. Her heart pounded while she grabbed essentials—a worn blanket, half-packed suitcase, and Naya's stuffed animal.
"Ben! Naya!" Gloria's voice cracked as she pushed open the living room door.
Ben stood by the window, his sixteen-year-old frame tense, phone clutched in his hand. "I can't reach Dad's number," he said quietly. "Do you think he's okay?"
Gloria froze. Paul had always been their rock. As a firefighter, he faced danger daily, but not knowing if he was near this blaze twisted her stomach into knots.
"We need to go," she said, steadying her voice despite the trembling in her chest. "Now."
She turned to eleven-year-old Naya, who clutched her seashell collection against her chest, eyes wide with confusion.
"Naya, honey, we have to leave," Gloria urged, crouching to meet her daughter's gaze.
"Mom, can I bring them?" Naya asked softly, fingers curling around the smooth shells.
Gloria managed a weak smile. "Yes, baby. They're important to you."
The smoke grew denser. They ran out the back door, the heat already licking at their yard. In the minivan, Gloria's hands shook on the steering wheel as flames engulfed their community behind them.
She couldn't move at first, transfixed by the violent orange painting the night sky. Her home—their safe place—disappeared before her eyes. The couch where Ben had performed karaoke, dreaming of stardom. Naya's shelf of treasures by the window. Every memory reduced to ash.
Paul's voice echoed in her mind: "Fire's a living thing. It breathes, it grows. Give it enough fuel, and it'll spread faster than you think."
A loud creak split the night as part of the roof collapsed. The fire hissed and howled like a living creature, devouring everything they had.
"Mom?" Naya's small voice snapped Gloria back to reality.
She caught their faces in the rearview mirror—Ben's jaw clenched, trying to be strong; Naya's eyes glistening with tears. They were waiting for her, waiting for her to drive away.
With one last glance at the flames, Gloria pressed the gas pedal.
At the shelter, Karen, the manager, greeted them with a clipboard. "Fill these out. The shelters are overrun right now. First come, first served."
Gloria's hands trembled as she wrote. How long would they be here? How would they survive?
Later that night, in their small assigned room, Gloria lay awake listening to the shelter's ventilation system. Tomorrow, they would have to start again. But for now, she let the silence swallow her, the weight of her grief too heavy to bear.
Tomorrow would come soon enough.
